22/06/2010 I am getting ready to build an elevated deck off the back of my house and would like to build a pergola into the design. I am attaching the plans for the deck and the pergola here. I think I've got a pretty good feel for where this is going but I haven't been able to figure out how to mount the...
25/07/2020 Have a friend lower the beam in place and while it is held drill two holes through the beam and joist. The exact size may change depending on the size of pergola you chose but (2) 1/2″ x 6″ lag screws and washers are good choices to connect your support beam to the joist. Repeat this for every support beam.
6 Steps to Design and Prepare a Pergola over a Deck 1. Decide How You’ll Use the Pergola. 2. Choose Attached or Free Standing. 3. Pick the Right Pergola Size. 4. Select Your Pergola Material. 5. Pick the Color. 6. Start Building the Pergola. Pergolas are quickly becoming the in-demand outdoor ...
To accurately determine this you need to figure out the additional #'s/sq ft of load that a structure as large as a pergola will place on top of the deck. Doing this is simple with something like a spa where you have a clear square footage area and a relatively even weight distribution when filled with water and people.
19/06/2010 I am attaching the plans for the deck and the pergola here. I think I've got a pretty good feel for where this is going but I haven't been able to figure out how to mount the pergola posts. As you can see right now the pergola posts sit right on top of the main beam. This seems like the strongest option but I am not sure how to attach it.
30/10/2007 It is very important to properly attach pergola posts when installing a pergola over a deck. The main concern is how the structure will react under high wind conditions. Most deck builders bolt pergola support posts to the frame of the deck using (2) 1/2 x 6 lag screws with washers per post.
20/04/2010 If the weight of a pergola is going to threaten the structure then the deck should be rebuilt. (There is a danger though of the pergola being torn off in a high wind and causing collateral damage. Whatever anchorage is used needs to be able to withstand substantial uplift and this may mean somehow reenforcing deck planking fasteners to resist being torn loose.)Raising top plate/ceiling heights16/05/2019Free-standing deck with roof08/04/2013cedar roof decking30/03/2011Pergola To Slab01/05/2009
01/09/2017 Building a pergola on top of a deck is a bit more complex than building directly on the ground. When you build on the ground you can bury your posts in the ground and use gravel dirt or concrete to give them more stability. On a deck you’re going to need to connect wood to wood which can potentially make the pergola less stable.
